Tailored products

Due to the anisotropic nature of thermoplastic composites, product design has a higher degree of freedom than isotropic materials, such as aluminium. This allows for more efficient use of material, meaning lower material costs, and a weight reduction compared to black metal. The figure below shows an example of a tailored product, a rib with varying thickness.

An automated manufacturing system of tailored blanks is being developed. A robot has been installed that will be used to place layers, or pieces, of uni-directional tapes on top of each other by a pick and place method.
