In TAPAS, the Thermoplastic Affordable Primary Aircraft Structures consortium, Dutch industrial companies and research institutes work together with aircraft manufacturer Airbus. TAPAS currently has nine partners in its collaboration. The technology is targeted for future Airbus-developed applications, including primary structural components like the fuselage and wings.

The industrial and scientific partners in the TAPAS consortium closely work together in:

  • the development of primary structural parts and
  • the research into corresponding technologies

The goal is to achieve TRL 6 at the end of the project in 2012, thus having the technology ready for application on new aircraft programmes. Within the TAPAS programme, two demonstrators will be made and evaluated:

  • a thermoplastic composite fuselage panel
  • a thermoplastic composite torsion box

Development for DTC within this programme is press forming of unidirectional-reinforced tape (UD-tape) for larger components. Two main products are a rib for the torsion box demonstrator and an omega stiffener for the fuselage panel.
